Recognizing that desalinated water will be an increasingly important source of water in arid communities, the KBH Desalination Plant also provides facilities and a research hub for the Consortium for Hi-Technology Investigations in Water and Wastewater (CHIWAWA). Research partners include:

- University of Texas at El Paso
- Texas A&M University, and
- New Mexico State University
The partners collaborate on research opportunities, education and outreach programs related to water management and desalination technology.
