John T. Hickerson Water Reclamation Facility

  • Operational in 1987
  • Up to 17.5 MGD Treated/Distributed

Plant Function

John T. Hickerson WWTP

The plant receives wastewater from residential and industrial sources in the west and northwest parts of the city. Reclaimed water is delivered to Coronado Country Club Golf Course and various parks and schools in west El Paso.

This plant is an extended aeration activated sludge treatment plant that uses both electric and gas powered air blowers in the treatment process. The plant also uses UV radiation as a means of disinfection of treated wastewater.

Area(s) Served

West El Paso

In 1990-1995, the facility underwent an expansion that brought it to a design flow of 17.5 million gallons per day. The most noted improvement during the expansion was the installation of sand filtration and ultraviolet disinfection. In 2015, a new 1.5 million gallon reclaimed water storage tank was installed to aid in the delivery of reclaimed water to customers on the west side of town. In 2016, the sand filters were replaced with Hydrotech Discfilters. These provide finer filtration and minimal maintenance.
