Project approach to minimize impact on Montana Avenue
EL PASO – Beginning the week of April 1, El Paso Water will start construction on a water line rehabilitation project. The project will take place along the westbound lanes of Montana Avenue, between East Paisano Drive and Airway Boulevard. Drivers should expect lane closures, limited detours and changing traffic patterns in the area for at least six months.
EPWater will use trenchless technology, a less invasive construction method, to insert a special liner inside a 70-year-old cast iron water pipe. The project will restore the pipe to near-new condition and extend the pipe’s life by 30-50 years.
EPWater is completing the project ahead of the Texas Department of Transportation’s plan for a complete resurfacing of Montana Avenue in the same area.
The project will be completed in two phases; each phase will last approximately 12 weeks:
Phase 1: Montana Avenue from E. Paisano Drive to Airport Road.
Phase 2: Montana Avenue from Airport Road to Airway Boulevard.
During Phase 1, westbound traffic on Montana Avenue will be reduced to one lane. To maintain water service to customers, an above-ground water line will be placed temporarily along the center median of Montana.
Due to the location of the line:
- No left turns for westbound traffic will be permitted.
- Left turns for eastbound traffic will be permitted only at Magruder Street and Geronimo Drive.
- No U-turns will be permitted.
A reminder to the public that EPWater currently has two additional projects underway in the following areas:
- Pipeline Protection Project at Airway and Viscount.
- Grissom and McAffee Stormwater Project at Montana and McAffee Place.
Please exercise extra caution in traffic-control zones to ensure crews can safely complete these projects.
